I had a zebra ride-on toy as a child…it was made of wood and had a yarn mane, and scooted me all over the basement floor. This new “learning” scooter seems a world apart from my beloved zebra, but that’s okay! (I’m pretty used to the idea that most of today’s toys are far more “high tech” that we could have ever imagined growing up!)
The VTech Zebra Scooter is very sturdy, likely to stand up to substantial abuse. He is also absolutely adorable, and I like the bright colors. And, of course, I always appreciate a volume control and the fact that this unit can be turned “off”, though it is pretty easy for a child to manipulate the lever to change play modes.
The positioning of the handle for the “push walker” (the 18+ month setting) is a little bit awkward, with the handle not extending out as far as the wheels (basic geometry, I understand, but it leads to some tripping in an effort to hold the handle and walk with the zebra). The second level (sitting on the zebra) seemed to work better for us. The interchangeable parts atop the zebra’s head (flashlight, compass, and walkie-talkie) are a nice idea, but may end up being tough to keep track of! We also loved the small bin on the front of the zebra, perfect for put it / take out play (mostly I put stuff in, they take it out!).
We have not used the Zebra in his “scooter” mode (ages 36+ months), but it seems relatively stable, and would be a good first scooter for little ones wanting to keep up with a bigger sibling on a real scooter.
All in all a fun toy, and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy as a gift for a toddler.

I really like the products that V Tech produces and have been a fan since my 14 year old was a toddler. The product teaches shapes, colors, and many motor skills. For younger tots it can be ridden, or pushed, and once they are more stable on their feet it works like a first scooter. The colors are very nice and not too busy and the little container on the front is great, it gives your little one a place to put things while he/she motors around your house or driveway. This is another great developmentally staged toy by V Tech. The age range on the box says 18-36 months, but I do think with monitoring you could go a bit younger with this one and it will entertain for years due to the fact that it transitions from a sit down push bike to a stand up scooter. This will be a great gift for the upcoming holidays!

Although the toy is officially owned by the eight month old baby (who can’t hold himself up on it yet), the 2 year old twins fight over it and the 8 year old felt compelled to check it out also. Even though the twins have been walking for a year, they delight in pushing this toy through the house, stopping periodically to push a button and repeat the words they hear. I don’t mind that there are interchangeable parts because each child can have a piece of the toy to play with.
Bottom line is, if the adult enjoys playing with it, the kids will too. I like this toy.
